This is to advise of a DELAYED START to the Gold Star expedition due to the heavy rain and winds forecast for Friday night.
2562 RCACC - depart RCL Br 50 Saturday morning 8:15am. Drivers: Lt(N) Tanya Kane, Capt Melissa McEvoy
***Have a good breakfast before you come***
In order to have a successful, enjoyable weekend, it is important that the cadets are fully aware of what to expect and how to prepare. This is a "true" hiking expedition on the East Coast Trail, where cadets will carry all issued and personal equipment. Ruck sacks will be issued for this purpose, and cadets will be walked through how and what to pack to ensure no unnecessary weight comes on the trail. Cadets may bring their own ruck sacks for this purpose if they wish to do so. We will be hiking the Father Troy's Trail and Stiles Cove Path sections of the trail, rated as Easy / Moderate. Total distance is 24.9 km (16.6 km on Saturday and 8.3 km on Sunday).
Within the joining instructions is a kit list. Please pay attention to Annex A and take into account the following clarifications specific to our CES - Cadets attending should be aware of the following:
We are monitoring the weather, particularly for Friday night. Should the current plan require any adjustments, they will be communicated NLT Thurs, 24 Sep.
Suitable boots for hiking will be a necessity. FTU boots are not suitable.
We have a very small stock of hiking boots available in limited sizes; please contact me in advance should a cadet require some and I can confirm if we will have any in the size required.
We have some rain gear in stock, of limited sizes. Cadets are strongly encouraged to bring their own. Bear in mind that wind pants / track pants do not offer the same protection as rain pants, and are not a suitable substitute.
All meals will be ration pack (MRE or IMP). So far, no dietary restrictions have been identified - please advise soonest. We have previously had issues with cadets refusing to eat MREs; these are high output activities that require significant energy, in addition to the energy needed to maintain warmth in the weather. Refusal to eat is a significant safety hazard and will result in the cadet being removed from training.
Electronics are not permitted during training. The environment here will be wet and so in order to avoid expensive damages to items such as cell phones, I suggest that they stay in the kit bag they arrive with and is retrieved only at the end of the weekend. We provide storage of personal kit bags. Cameras that are waterproof are encouraged.
2562 Cadets will meet at the Legion NLT 18:45 Drivers: Lt(N) Tanya Kane, Capt Melissa McEvoy
